Remembering Charlie

On the evening of February 26, 1996, Sergeant Charlie Kubala responded to what would be his final call serving the citizens of Sumter County, South Carolina. Charlie was a 13 year veteran of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and a shift supervisor. He was married and a father to two beautiful children that he talked about all the time. He was very active in the community, on duty and off. Charlie Kubala was a dedicated leader and mentor to many, including the young people involved with the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post.

On that terrible evening, Charlie was doing what he loved, serving and trying to protect the citizens of Sumter. He was responding to a call about a prowler when he was taken from us.

The loss of someone so dedicated was tough for all, especially his family. Just after his passing, several members of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and the Sumter community came together to ensure that his children would be taken care of when it came time for their college. Since the beginning, the citizens and businesses of the Sumter community have graciously come together each year with law enforcement to remember Charlie Kubala and honor his memory by contributing to this cause.
